How to Calculate MPG

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) rates newer vehicles based on how fuel-efficient they are. A lot goes into calculating these gas mileages, but as disclaimers for them usually note, actual gas mileage may vary. Not sure how to calculate gas mileage during your Devine commute? Find out how to calculate mpg with the experts at Brown Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram below! If you have any questions afterward or along the way, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for more information!

What’s Considered Good Gas Mileage?

There’s no universally accepted metric of “good” gas mileage, however, certain vehicle body types offer higher mileage than others. For example, a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram SUV is more likely to get good mileage, but it wouldn’t be as high as you’d expect the mileage to be on a compact car. Gasoline-powered vehicles can offer good mpg ratings, but they’ll never be as good as what you’d expect on a gas-electric hybrid. Whether you’re opting for a new vehicle or a used car, you’ll always want to keep in mind what gas mileage you can expect on highways and within cities!

Gas Mileage Calculator

Learning how to calculate mpg ratings for your Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram car, truck, or SUV is a relatively simple process. Just follow the instructions outlined in our gas mileage calculator below:

  1. Fill your gas tank and either reset your trip odometer or record the exact mileage after refilling. Be sure you also find out how much gas your tank holds by checking your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
  2. Drive your car as you would normally. Note that how you drive will affect your calculated gas mileage.
  3. Refill your tank and record your mileage. If you wait longer to refill, your calculation will be more accurate as it will be based on a more balanced mix of driving conditions.
  4. The easiest way to calculate your gas mileage is to simply divide the number of miles traveled by the number of gallons of gas your vehicle took to refill. In sum, that’s miles driven divided by gallons of gas used.
  5. If you forget to check how many gallons it took to fill up your car, you can go by where your tank was when you refilled (i.e. ¼, ½, or ¾) and then divide out your total tank capacity accordingly to come to the number of gallons refilled. Then, divide miles driven by that approximation. This will be less accurate since the gas gauge in some cars isn’t always 100% accurate. A digital gas gauge is more accurate than an analog gauge.
